Professor Dr Hemangi Rajiv Jerajani
Professor Dr. Hemangi Rajiv Jerajani MD, DVD, FIAD was a Senior Professor at MGM Medical College & Hospital, Mumbai. Previously she headed the Department of Dermatology at Lokmanya Tilak Municipal Medical College & General Hospital, Mumbai for more than 30 years. She studied at Seth G S Medical Collage & KEM General Hospital, and LTMG Medical Collage & Hospital, Mumbai.
Her areas of interest included contact dermatitis, autoimmune blistering diseases, HIV/AIDS and dermatopathology. She performed pioneering research work in contact dermatitis in India and collaborated with international researchers. She was the founding member of CODFI (Contact and Occupational Dermatitis Forum of India). and led the association as Secretary, President and Mentor for fellowships. She was organising secretary of the first APEODS in India, in Mumbai in 1999.
She was a distinguished teacher who made an immense contribution in guiding numerous students and fellows, not only in India but also abroad. Many of her students now occupy senior academic positions in prestigious institutes, continuing her legacy. She has also been awarded for her contribution in teaching with the Professor Ratan Singh Award at Dermacon 2015 and the Best Teacher Award at Dermacon 2012 from the Indian Association of Dermatologists, Venereologists & Leprologists.
She was the first female President of the Indian Association of Dermatologists, Venereologists & Leprologists in 2010-2011. Her work encouraged and inspired female dermatologists in India to take up administrative posts in the association.
Professor Jerajani won many laurels to her name at state, national and international levels. Some of her recent achievements include the Maria Duran Medal awarded in 2019 at World Congress of Dermatology, Milan and the Professor K.C. Kandhari Foundation Award awarded at E-Dermacon 2021.
She published over 200 papers in various national and international journals and textbooks. She was an eloquent speaker and delivered more than 525 oral presentations in various national and international forums. Despite these achievements, she was a very down-to-earth person. She always motivated students and colleagues to achieve great heights in their career and to be compassionate with their patients, and was a great inspiration for both all. Sadly she died in 2024.
