Dr John McFadden (1959-2023)
Dr John McFadden trained in general dermatology at St Mary’s Hospital and St John’s Institute of Dermatology with Professor Malcolm Greaves and Professor Lionel Fry. He trained in contact dermatitis with Drs Etain Cronin, Richard Rycroft and Ian White. Prof Greaves described John as one of the most intelligent people he had ever met. John was appointed to the Cutaneous Allergy Department of St John’s Institute of Dermatology in London. He published over 200 papers and completed a higher degree on clinical and experimental aspects of hair dye allergy. He had a particular interest in methodology and cosmetic allergy. He was widely in demand as an invited speaker, lecturing in over 25 different countries and had a particular affinity with Thailand, establishing a contact dermatitis training course there in 1999.
Sadly John died in ICU at Guy’s Hospital on 21 October 2023 after a long illness.
Professor Mabs Chowdhury, on behalf of the British Association of Dermatology, commented that John always had a different perspective on scientific matters, which allowed him to make original and often pivotal hypotheses. He had a unique and inspiring way of looking at immunological issues and encouraged others to excel and flourish.
